![]() King Rhobar III managed to peacefully reunite most of the land, and he set sail for the Southern Islands. Rarely do you see sprawling vistas that make advantage of the game’s generous view distances, rarely can you actually take a less direct route, and when you do find some sort of clever route, you die horribly in-between geometry. ArcaniA War covers the southern islands until it finally reaches the idyllic isle of Feshyr. The saga of Myrtania continues in Arcania: Gothic 4, an action-heavy RPG in the vein of Oblivion, where a traditional fantasy setting provides the backdrop as players explore a world torn apart by civil war and constant battles against orcs. ![]() The first teaser trailer revealed that Arcania was scheduled to be released in Winter 2009, but JoWooD Entertainment has subsequently pushed back the release to October 12, 2010. Its missing some core RPG elements and fundamental standards established by older open-world RPGs decades ago (like proper co-op and online features). ArcaniA (or Arcania) is a spin-off installment set in the Gothic series, and the first one to be developed by a company other than Piranha Bytes the game was developed by Spellbound. ![]() I’ve only played a few hours of it, but even after you get past the linear starting area (which is really just exposition and an extended tutorial), you don’t get to see the truly open world we’ve been used to. Elden Ring may be one of the highest reviewed games in modern history on Metacritic, but its far from perfect. They were large ambitious games, sitting well alongside The Elder Scrolls series. On the other hand, the two titles were open world RPGs with plenty of opportunities to enter weaving quest lines, even going so far as to enter warzones and influence them somewhat. Gothic Story Introduction Since Rhobar III, the king of Myrtana, and his men landed on Argaan, war has covered the Southern Islands like an oil-soaked cloth. I played the first two Gothic titles, and while I enjoyed them thoroughly despite my rather early age at the time, there were elements that would be seen as antiquated nowadays, like picking up whatever you’d find on the floor of the forests to craft random stuff, or the fact that enemies would have a fixed difficulty to them, killing you almost instantly if you didn’t know any better.
